Gearbox is close to being sold by Embracer, says website

Gearbox is close to being sold, according to a report from Kotaku. The Borderlands studio, which is part of the Embracer Group, has been involved in sale rumors since September 2023, when a Bloomberg report mentioned the possibility.

At the time, Bloomberg obtained an email from Dan Hewitt, the studio's head of communications, saying that there was the possibility of either Gearbox being sold or becoming independent, among others.

According to leak sources, CEO Randy Pitchford held a meeting this week saying that the decision had been made, and that the studio was in the final stages of the sale process. The buyer, however, was not revealed.

The Embracer Group, current owner of Gearbox, has become one of the biggest villains in gaming recently. After buying a series of studios in 2021, the conglomerate has been showing several signs of crisis, with layoffs at Crystal Dynamics, Gearbox and, more recently, Eidos Montreal.
